MLAA 62nd FALL ART SHOW & EXHIBIT
The 62nd Fall Art Show was a success as far as attendance and raffle baskets. Unfortunately we only had 49 entries with 31 artists participating. Of the 31 artists, 18 of them were MLAA members with 26 entries. Ten MLAA members won twelve awards. They were:
Barbara Conley – 1st Oil & Acrylic and Best of Show
Pat Gray – 2nd Mixed Media
Susan Lea Hackett – 2nd Watercolor
Renetta Hayes – 1st Pastel, HM Pastel
Barbra MacNair – HM Mixes Media
Marta Magistrali – 1st & 2nd Three Dimensional
Joyce Schoettgen – 2nd Pastel
Irene Taylor – 1st Mixed Media
Barbara Young – HM Watercolor
Our members winning pieces are shown throughout this newsletter. I apologize for the quality of the photos. They were taken under glass at the show.
We believe the problem with the small turnout of entries had to do with the restrictions of size and the theme. It is recommended that we not require theme or size restrictions in the future shows, even though we had some very inventive and interesting entries. The theme could be done as a category, much as we have done with foothill favorites in the past.
We had 55 Sponsor donations and 21 raffle baskets. We had nine pieces of art from MLAA members: Barbara Conley, Kitty Davids, Pat Gray, Susan Lea Hackett, Renetta Hayes, Susie Hoffman, Loretta Pagni, Irene Taylor and Barbara Young. Barbra MacNair donated the Grand Prize. Thank you to these members who generously donated their art. Toulumne County Arts Alliance provided a beautiful sign for the front of the Opera Hall listing all of our donors. Thank you notes were sent to all of our sponsors.
Linda Happel reported a net profit of $1,234.44. We had several things which contributed to this profit which made up for our shortage of entries. Our cash donations were $1,102 and raffle sales were $1,234. We also sold four paintings at the show which netted $223.
One of the main contributors was our partnership with TCAA. They provided the venue, publicity, reception table assistance and their members pitched in to sell raffle tickets when we were not available. The cost of the Opera Hall alone would have wiped out our profit. A HUGE THANK YOU TO TCAA FOR THEIR PARTNERSHIP & SPONSORSHIP. We felt it was beneficial to have the show run over two weekends and it was pleasant working with the Photo Show members It was nice to have both shows at the same time.
The other activity that contributed so much to the 2nd weekend of the show was the Sign Painting class and Gold Leaf Workshop as well as the numerous “Letterheads” who came from all over the country to meet in Sonora. It was truly fascinating to watch these artists at
work. All in all, except for the restricted space and the theme, it was a very good thing to work with the TCAA Board on this show.
The Show would not have been as successful without the Fall Show Committee. Please thank these members:
Kitty Davids, Beverly Drouin, Linda Happel, Lorna Hunt and Irene Taylor. Each member and I worked very hard to make this show a success. You should appreciate their efforts. Other members who made notable contributions were Lisa Tebaldi, Rita Bettencourt and Loretta Pagni who helped get sponsors The committee also appreciates all of the members who worked the entry table and floor selling tickets.
Thank you to the Show Committee and all of the members who helped make our 62nd Show a great success.

These three venerable organizations are the three oldest arts organizations in Tuolumne County; the oldest being the Mother Lode Art Association [62 years]; Tuolumne County Arts Alliance [formerly, Central Sierra Arts Council] at 44 years; and Sonora Bach Festival - 38 years.
October 4, 2014 is "California Arts Day" at which time Tuolumne County Arts Alliance will be holding for the third consecutive year: "CELEBRATE ART". This year, we have invited the Mother Lode Art Association and the Mother Lode Photo Club to be a part of the day into evening weekend event which will be held at the Historic Sonora Opera Hall - October 4 -5. This juried art show will be MLAA's 62nd Annual Art Exhibit. The Sonora Photo Club's photography exhibit is new this year and will be a sneak peek for the TCAA sponsored Annual "In Focus" Photography Show, now in its 28th year planned this coming year in April. [Date to be announced].
This year will feature a themed juried art and photography exhibition, a downtown "Plein Air Paint Out" event featuring local and out of town artists and advertised in the national magazine "Plein Air in their August/September issue. The themed art and photography juried art show is about incorporating some sort of signage in the painting or photograph. This will be carried over into the next weekend, October 11 which is Sonora Second Saturday Art Walk's 5th Anniversary in downtown Sonora. That evening will see the screening of the documentary movie "Sign Painter" which provides a unique, interesting, historical view of the "signs of our lives" and how that has influenced our cultural view and certainly is a historical statement of all of our lives and times. The film is based on the book "Sign Painters" by, Faith Levine and Sam Macon and work is underway to have some of the nationally know sign/mural painters represented in the book and the film from across the nation attending and giving demonstrations. " Sign Painters celebrates the hand-painted sign industry, an American tradition. This documentary explores a fascinating insight into a a highly specialized underground trade, emphasizing an appreciation for a balance between art and commerce."
