December, 2024 MLAA Newsletter
Hello everybody from Bob Feigen,
I hope all is well.
December brings in lower temperatures, the holidays, and good family times. Our next scheduled monthly Board and General meeting and Artist demonstration will be on Monday, January 20, 2025. Our Guest Artist will be our good friend Judy Cain, who will critique everyone’s artwork brought to the meeting. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about your and others’ artwork techniques and composition. Our attending members are asked to bring one piece of artwork to the meeting.
MLAA Board and Committees will continue to be working in the background as we plan for the 2025 programs and activities. Our Signature event is the 70th Annual Mother Lode Art Association Art Show being held from April 7 through April 13 at the Sonora Opera Hall.
Just think, a small group of artists got together, formed the Mother Lode Art Association, and held the first Mother Lode Art Show in 1955, which has today become our Signature 70thAnnual MLAA Event. So many dedicated artists and MLAA members have come and gone, and given their time and energy into developing and preserving the wonderful tradition. Last year, 48 artists entered 185 pieces of art into the show. I believe the MLAA founders would approve and be smiling at the continuation of our Annual Event that started 70 years ago.
I am pleased to announce that our new chairperson for the 2005 MLAA Art Show is Christine Halley. She brings a wealth of experience and artistic talent to the table as well as management skills to guide us into the Art Show. Preparation and planning for the Art Show started months ago with meetings with the Chamber, Visitors Bureau (Go Tuolumne), Radio Station (KVML), Union Democrat (Weekender), Insurance, our sponsors, etc. “Promotion of the MLAA Art Show” is a key component each year to the success of the show, which began months ago and was presented at the Annual Tuolumne County Tourism Summit hosted by the Visitors Bureau on October 17, 2024 .
We are putting together some management teams for the Art Show. If you have some time to volunteer to the show and work with a group of dedicated MLAA Artists and friends, we need and would appreciate your help. The Show Prospectus and Application will be out the first week in January and posted on our MLAA website at Motherlodeartassociation.org. If you have any questions or comments you can contact us through the website or my email.
Moving on:
Special kudos go out to Bill Heiser and his working officers and leadership team with the Sonora Photo Club (SPC) which is part of the MLAA. The SPC held its final regular meeting for the year. They reviewed entries for their theme of the month, “Panoramas”. There was also a slide show with photos from their September field trip to Chinese Camp to photograph historic buildings. There was also a discussion and voting on club roles for 2025. Finally, the Club learned this week that the County will charge non-profits for use of the Library Conference Meeting Room in 2025. The Leadership Team is currently considering options and how to fund this unexpected new expense. Looking ahead, the Photo Club’s theme of the month for January 2025 is “Macro.” They will meet from 1-4 PM on January 12, 2025 and all are welcome to attend.
Also, special recognition has to go to our wonderful MLAA School Scholarship and Arts in Education Committee for 2024 (Kelli O’Brien, Maureen Nolan, Christine Halley, and Rana Ford). Over $6,000 is being given out to ten of our local schools. They have administered the granting process professionally and with accountability with the funds going directly to the respective Art Programs and not the general funds within the schools. This is the best managed and well-run Arts in Education Program I have experienced in my involvement with the MLAA.
A special acknowledgement also has to go out Claire Chateauneuf who has managed our Plein Air Group and has planned and coordinated our MLAA outings each month throughout our County and the surrounding areas. Claire maintains a working email list of fellow artists who enjoy painting outdoors. Whether you are an experienced or beginning artist this is a great time and opportunity to get out and paint in our great outdoors and selected locations throughout the year. Contact Claire at [email protected].
In closing, as we approach the Holidays, we have much to be thankful for. The MLAA Board of Directors wish everyone a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year. The MLAA is fiscally sound and we look forward to another great year for our Mother Lode Art Association in 2025 as we maintain all of our existing programs and are planning new ones.
We hope everyone renews their MLAA Membership and brings in a new artist friend to enjoy and participate in the rich tradition of our 75 Year Old Mother Lode Art Association. Dues for 2025 have increased to $25 for a one-year membership, which is still a bargain! Please take the time to visit our newly updated website at motherlodeartassociation.org
Wishing all the best for the holidays,
Bob
