62nd Annual Fall Art Show & Exhibit
Renetta Hayes, Chairman
I trust you have all gotten your prospectus for our Fall Art Show. If you have not, please go to www.motherlodeartassociation.org and download one so you can get it in the mail by Sept. 19th.
The show will be held over two weekends, Oct. 4-5 and 11-12. It will be held open for Second Saturday on the 11th from 5 – 7 pm. We are looking for all 1st Place, Best of Show and Mayor’s awards to be hung in another venue for the rest of the month which is California’s Arts and Humanities Month. By combining our show with the various activities being developed by TCAA, we will have the opportunity for the show to be seen by a wide variety of people.
The picture on the front of the newsletter is the Grand Prize donated by Barbra MacNair, last year’s Best of Show winner. It is a 21” x 25” mixed media collage using handmade paper, titled “Harvest Moon”. It is on display at the Aloft Gallery where opportunity tickets will be sold until the Show opens, then they will be sold at the Opera Hall. You were provided a picture of the piece with 12 raffle tickets for you to sell. If you don’t want to sell them, then put your name on the tickets and deliver them and the money to the Gallery or at the Show. Thanks for your support.
Some of the other activities that will be going on are:
1. A juried Photography Show also at the Opera Hall at the same time as our Art Show.
2. A plein air paint out up and down Washington Street on the 4th. Lorna is coordinating this activity and the finished paintings will be on display and for sale during the Art Show reception.
3. Also on the evening of the 4th, the music of “Swing Gitane” will fill the Opera Hall with dance music. Tickets for this event can be purchased from TCAA.
4. On the following Saturday, Oct. 11th from 9:30 am through the afternoon there will be a mini “Letterhead Meet” at the Opera Hall with well known sign painters demonstrating painting and lettering.
5. Also on the 11th in the evening, the film “Sign Painters” will be shown at the Opera Hall. Tickets for this event will also be on sale through TCAA.
As you can see, it stacks up to be a very exciting two weeks for the art community. We need your support to make our portion a success. Let Linda Happel know how you would like to help. 532-7240 or [email protected]. I have included our Sponsor Letter for you to put in your pocket and at least ask one merchant for a donation. Please help. Renetta

SAVE THE DATE!! PLAN AHEAD!! GET READY FOR A GREAT ART MONTH AHEAD!! MONTH OF OCTOBER 2014! THIS IS NEWS FOR YOU AND TO BE SURE AND PASS ON TO "FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS" - [yes! "That one"] AND your own as well!
TUOLUMNE COUNTY ARTS ALLIANCE [TCAA] AND MOTHER LODE ART ASSOCIATION [MLAA] FUNDRAISERS in Partnership with the City of Sonora. A Benefit to support MLAA Scholarships and TCAA Art programs.
The Month of October will be designated by Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors as "ARTS & HUMANITIES MONTH" - this is also designated to be the same by the State of California and Nationally by National Endowment for the Arts, as well. 2014 will see multiple Arts and Music events on every weekend in October heralding the wonderful fall colors that artists love to paint and the music of the season with the 38th Annual Sonora Bach Festival with performances scheduled throughout the month of October at various locations. These three venerable organizations are the three oldest arts organizations in Tuolumne County; the oldest being the Mother Lode Art Association [62 years]; Tuolumne County Arts Alliance [formerly, Central Sierra Arts Council] at 44 years; and Sonora Bach Festival - 38 years.
October 4, 2014 is "California Arts Day" at which time Tuolumne County Arts Alliance will be holding for the third consecutive year: "CELEBRATE ART". This year, we have invited the Mother Lode Art Association and the Mother Lode Photo Club to be a part of the day into evening weekend event which will be held at the Historic Sonora Opera Hall - October 4 -5. This juried art show will be MLAA's 62nd Annual Art Exhibit. The Sonora Photo Club's photography exhibit is new this year and will be a sneak peek for the TCAA sponsored Annual "In Focus" Photography Show, now in its 28th year planned this coming year in April. [Date to be announced].
This year will feature a themed juried art and photography exhibition, a downtown "Plein Air Paint Out" event featuring local and out of town artists and advertised in the national magazine "Plein Air in their August/September issue. The themed art and photography juried art show is about incorporating some sort of signage in the painting or photograph. This will be carried over into the next weekend, October 11 which is Sonora Second Saturday Art Walk's 5th Anniversary in downtown Sonora. That evening will see the screening of the documentary movie "Sign Painter" which provides a unique, interesting, historical view of the "signs of our lives" and how that has influenced our cultural view and certainly is a historical statement of all of our lives and times. The film is based on the book "Sign Painters" by, Faith Levine and Sam Macon and work is underway to have some of the nationally know sign/mural painters represented in the book and the film from across the nation attending and giving demonstrations. " Sign Painters celebrates the hand-painted sign industry, an American tradition. This documentary explores a fascinating insight into a a highly specialized underground trade, emphasizing an appreciation for a balance between art and commerce."
